ITALIAN is a " ROMANCE " language, along with French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian,
to mention the most widely spoken ones. This is because they all derive directly from the language of Rome-Latin. Most of the approximately 56 million inhabitant of Italy speak Italian. There are also many immigrant of Italain origin in North American who continue to speak Italian.
